Climate Change Exacerbates Europe’s Drought Risk, Scientists Say
The worst drought in recent European history has left parched rivers, water restrictions, and devastating wildfires in its wake from France to Romania. A historic heatwave in June brought temperatures soaring to record highs, but the underlying cause is more insidious: human-caused climate change.
A new study by an international team of scientists reveals that extreme heat, rather than low rainfall, drives Europe’s droughts. The warmer atmosphere acts like a sponge, soaking up moisture from soils and plants, leaving them dry and vulnerable to wildfires. This phenomenon is not unique to Europe; climate change is making destructive events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves more frequent and intense worldwide.
The study found that extremely dry soils were five times more likely in western Europe and 11 times more likely in eastern Europe compared to a world without climate change. The evaporative demand – the atmosphere’s potential to draw moisture from soils and plants – was about 80 times more likely between April and June in western Europe. These numbers underscore the reality that the planet has already warmed by about 1.4C since 1850-1900, primarily due to fossil fuel emissions.
The implications of this study extend beyond the current drought. As the world’s fastest-warming continent, Europe is facing a new normal – one where droughts and wildfires become increasingly common. This means that even regions with relatively wet winters can quickly turn dry just months later, as happened during last month’s heatwave. The consequences are dire: thousands of excess deaths, damaged ecosystems, and economic losses in the billions.
Climate change is not a distant threat; it’s a present reality that demands immediate attention from policymakers. Droughts and wildfires are no longer mere natural disasters but rather symptoms of a larger problem – one that requires coordinated action to mitigate its effects. This includes investing in renewable energy, implementing water conservation measures, and supporting climate-resilient agriculture.
The study’s lead author warns that even in regions where rainfall has changed little or is projected to increase seasonally, drought risk continues to rise. A warmer atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapour for every 1C rise in temperature. The math is clear: as the planet warms, so does the thirst of our atmosphere.
As Europe adapts to this new climate reality, it’s essential to recognize that droughts and wildfires are not just environmental issues but also human rights concerns. Communities must have access to clean water and sustainable livelihoods to adapt to a changing climate. Governments and international organizations must prioritize support for vulnerable regions and communities, providing them with the resources they need to cope with these disasters.
